99 displaced Bengali families to be rehabilitated in Kanpur Dehat
Lucknow: The state cabinet on Tuesday granted post-facto approval to a proposal for the rehabilitation of Hindu Bengali families displaced from former East Pakistan, now Bangladesh.Under the decision, 99 families from the Mawana tehsil area of Meerut district will be resettled in Bhaisaya and Tajpur Tarasoli villages in Rasulabad tehsil of Kanpur Dehat. Officials said the move is aimed at providing permanent residential security to families that have been awaiting formal rehabilitation. As part of the package, the cabinet fixed the lease rent at a nominal Re 1 and approved the format of the land lease (patta), enabling beneficiaries to obtain legal residential rights over allotted land. The decision builds on provisions laid down in 2021, when a similar rehabilitation framework was approved for 63 displaced families. Authorities said the current move extends the same benefits to additional families, ensuring continuity in the state’s rehabilitation policy.Officials noted that administrative action for the relocation was already initiated earlier, in view of directions from the National Green Tribunal and the urgency of the matter. The cabinet’s approval now formalises those steps and paves the way for completion of the rehabilitation process.Govt sources said the initiative reflects the state’s effort to address long-pending rehabilitation issues in a structured manner, enabling displaced families to integrate into mainstream society with dignity and security.
